Photovoltaics
Being confronted with increasing requirements for the consumption of electric energy and diminishing fossil fuel resources, the mankind continues in searching alternative energetic sources capable to reduce or, which would be much better, to completely eliminate the incoming lack of energy. At the same time, in view of continuing global warming of our planet, people try to find ecologically pure sources with no negative environmental impacts.
One of possible solutions consists in using the principle of a photovoltaic effect in so-called photovoltaic or solar energy power stations. In comparison with classical power stations, these plants have substantially lower efficiency, but it is probably the only disadvantage of them. On the contrary, we can find a number of their advantages:
- They produce neither CO2, nor any other greenhouse gases, flying ashes or toxic wastes.
- They are absolutely noiseless.
- They use solar radiation and in consequence, they don't consume any raw materials.
- The maintenance-free technology with high reliability and long operating life.
Governments reacted to the need of photovoltaic power stations as well and have begun to implement these plants to the programs oriented to the support of electric energy renewable sources. This support may be realized either in form of subventions to the construction of such a plant or for example as a guarantee of a state purchasing price of generated electric energy for a period up to 20 years.
Photovoltaics has become one of the most dynamically developing branches in the field of electric energy renewable sources. Not only large solar power stations are constructed, but small network systems have been increasingly realized being built as parts of family houses or commercial buildings. The company APIN s.r.o. has decided to support availability of these systems in the Czech market and put them into its production program.
PHOTOVOLTAIC CELL - THE PRINCIPLEPhotovoltaics uses the direct conversion of light energy to electric energy in a semiconductor element named the photovoltaic (solar) cell. Direct electric current passes through the external circuit branched between the cell's contacts being directly proportional to the cell surface and to the intensity of incident solar radiation.
The tension of one cell being too low (ca 0.5 V), the cells are further interconnected. The assemblies of cells created in this manner in a serial or serial-parallel arrangement are hermetically closed in the structure of covering materials of the final solar panel.
SOLAR PANELThe photovoltaic panel is created by the electrical interconnection of solar cells. The main function of the panel consists in a hermetical casing of the solar cells and ensuring sufficient mechanical resistance (e.g. against hailstorm, frost, etc.).
The panels are usually equipped with duralumin frames on the circumference, which serve for the reinforcement of the whole structure and at the same time facilitate the fixing of the panels to the structure of the photovoltaic system. The front covering material is special hardened glass resistant even to a strong hailstorm.
